Haematite

Used extensively since the Middle Ages when it was named in Europe (aima/ema in Greek means blood - possibly because of the deep red colour of the powder and streak). A relatively common iron ore, occurring in thin, relatively brittle, crystals which are black or a dark iron-grey. Individual crystals have a strong metallic lustre. May also be less solid, almost earthy and red in colour. (see also: Colour Significance).

Reference to this powerful mineral in ancient times is rare because it possibly had other names and uses. Some ancient graves have yielded some spectacular jewellery but only in Royal context and often only traces as deterioration have destroyed the original items. The mystery around this mineral (especially in its natural crystal form) is further enhanced in magical context of famous wizards and alchemists, both real and legendary, like Merlin and Paracelsus.

Physically it is known to be able to keep the body cool. Placed on the forehead haematite will help to draw out a fever. It is also useful for muscle cramps, anaemia, nervous disorders and insomnia. It is believed to increase resistance to stress and anxiety. It is increasingly used in complementary techniques of spinal realignment. It is said that pieces of haematite placed on the base of the spine, on the area of misalignment and on top of the spine, aids in the adjustment of the vertebrae and has been known to assist in the healing of fractures. It is used in the treatment of heart problems, rapid pulse, leg cramps and bleeding and helps circulate oxygen throughout the body.

Although it is considered to have a beneficial effect on the outcome of legal matters and conflict; Haematite is often referred to as "the stone of the mind" - helping the user to deal with and sort out troublesome problems of the mind. Its power lies in its unusual ability of producing a strangely calming influence on the mind while simultaneously stimulating mental capacity, courage, confidence and optimism. It assists in promoting the realisation of one's full potential, and also to dispel self-limiting thinking.

Used in the enhancement of mental attunement, memory development, promotion of original thinking and calculating ability, willpower and concentration. Helps one deal with changes in life and lifestyle. It is used in astral projection. (see also: How they Work).

As jewellery it was used for mourning but now it is used with other minerals as fashion jewellery. It is also a good "divider" on multi functional healing jewellery items (like necklaces and bracelets).
