Agate (blue)

Balances -- stabilises -- protects. A powerfully healing gemstone and a prized amulet. The use of this mineral dates back to the beginning of recorded history. It was a highly prized decoration in Roman temples. Agate is believed to have been used in the oldest examples of jewellery and was found in the tomb of Queen Pu-abi at Ur and dating back to 3000 BC. Agate, a variety of quartz, can form when silica-rich waters seep into cavities created by gas bubbles that become trapped in cooling magma. Agate that is not completely filled often has quartz crystals growing in this hollow space. It has distinctive banded patterns and colours, which vary according to different impurities.

Agates are considered very powerful gemstones and are widely used for general healing, (see also How they Work). The blue agate, is the lighter of all the agates, calming the mind and healing fiery emotions. Therefore they are ideal for jewellery, such as bracelets and necklaces, as well as prayer beads or worry beads. Also thought to be of assistance in childbirth and white agate is used to aid in problems with lactation. Problems with eyesight, particularly with depth of vision, may be alleviated with the use of agate.

Used for heart trouble and in treating inflammation, it is also known to reduce fever and banded agate relieves spastic discomfort. Blue lace agate is used for treating problems of the throat. Known to assist in cases of poisoning, agate also alleviates hearing and hair problems.

Agate calms, strengthens and tones the body and mind and promotes inner peace. It has a balancing and stabilising effect and enhances self-esteem and promotes self-confidence manifesting in truthfulness, promptness and dependability, as well as assisting physical and emotional security. Banded Agate instils courage and extra strength to face life's challenges. Used as a cure for insomnia, it ensures pleasant dreams. Assisting in banishing fear, it also improves vitality and eloquence. Blue lace agate is used to relieve depression, stress and tension (including stubbornness and anger). When placed in the hand it is said to de-stress. Any agate will assist physical and emotional security -- thus agates can stabilise the sexual energy and regulate the sex drive.

Thought to guarantee plentiful crops, it also protects the wearer from danger (despair). To alleviate sickness is historic times, it was placed in water, which was then used for cooking and drinking.

Astrologically it is associated with Gemini (21 May - 21 June) - (generally promoting health and wealth) - induces love/success, as well as Leo and Virgo. It facilitates the ability to discern truth and accept circumstances. It is associated with the 12th Anniversary of a special event (bonding) - together with silk. Dream significance of agate signifies a journey.

It promotes love, wealth and abundance. Agates engender an appreciation of all natural things around you. Agates work with chakras and attitudes based on gemstone colour (see Colour Significance).
